Light Speed Astronauts

“If you are in a spaceship that is traveling at the speed of light, and you turn on the headlights, does anything happen?”
– Steven Wright
The “Light Speed Astronauts” Collection are a creative visual interpretation of what Astronauts might look like as they travel near the speed of light.
Two Astronauts were racing by you (the viewer) in their spaceship at the threshold of light speed. And you had a special freeze frame camera or projector that could capture an image at a millionth of a nanosecond of that instance where they were right in front of you as they raced by, how would they look? The color spectrum could not keep up with their velocity, so what would their color be at that instant they passed the viewer? What would the colors be?
Depending on the Astronaut’s angle of trajectory, how would that change the viewer’s color perception and image? Would the image still have human form? Would the image be stretched or distorted?
The “Light Speed Astronauts” Collection are a creative visual interpretation of that effect.
The art medium is acrylic on canvas.

Today I uploaded 1 drawing and 1 Watercolor I did last summer of Belvedere Castle in Central Park, NY.
It is in the Middle of Manhattan but you would never know it with the castle, the small lake and the green trees.

Today I added a recent watercolor I did of the Wall Street Bull statue. I worked on it last summer and it was fun to watch all the tourists rub the horns and nose for good luck. I saw several businessmen walk by and go behind the statue and grab the bull by the balls for good luck. Hey, whatever works!….

Here is a watercolor of Venice I did last year. It is a scene from an alleyway with 2 parked Gondolas.
Another Reason Why I Love Painting Sunflowers…

On my online art gallery, you will notice there is alot of sunflowers paintings.
People have asked why I love painting them. Besides the beauty and vibrant colors of sunflowers, there is another reason.
It all began twenty years ago while I was backpacking across Europe.
I just finished my one year art foundation program in the UK. I was eager to travel and see all the sites.
It was in July 1988 and I was in the South of France.
I was in a small village in Provence and I saw a vibrant yellow field of sunflowers.
I saw a little one that was drooping down. It looked like the runt of the litter, not getting enough sunlight or not enough water.
I was compelled to draw it with whatever art materials I had.
I rummaged through my backpack and found my sketchbook, pencil and conte crayons.
With these, I used to sketch out the Pensive Sunflower.
But to give the sunflower the honor it deserved. I needed color.
I remember it was a really hot that day and my oil pastels were soft and buttery.
I used up all of my burnt sienna, cadmium yellow and cadmium orange to add color.
I was intensely focused on the sunflower. While I was working, a car drove by and stopped at the nearby road.
I heard the car door shut and I heard someone approach me.
An elderly lady in her late 60’s or early 70’s smiling, greeting me and looking anxiously at my sunflower painting.
She first said “Bonjour,” I politely replied “Bonjour” in my broken French.
She then realized that I was not French and she greeted me again in English.
She asked that she would like to purchase my painting of the sunflower.
I cannot remember the exact amount she offered me in French Francs, but for me, that was alot of money for a starving artist traveling through Europe!
I was so excited to sell an art piece! I happily agreed! I finished the painting, signed it, and carefully removed the sunflower painting out of my sketchbook and handed it to her.
We both said “merci” and before she walked away, she said [in English, with her French accent] that her grandparents once purchased a similar drawing from a traveling artist from Nederland (Holland) that used to draw in the area around 100 years ago…….
Then, she winked at me and she said that my sunflower drawing was beautiful.
She went back to her little Renault and drove away…..
